What Are the Words to the Rosary

THE ROSARY & HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY

The Rosarium, meaning "crown of roses" in its most universal form is a form of prayer used particularly in the Catholic Church, and also refers to the string of prayer beads used to count the component prayers.

Traditionally it was St. Dominic (d. 1221) moved by a vision of the blessed mother, who derived the rosary prayer as we know it today.  The Apostles Creed, The Our Father, ten repeated Hail Marys and the doxology (Glory Be), repeated five times.

Used to transfigure the Cathars during the Albigensian Crusade in Languedoc in the south of France (1209–1229), the fervent preaching of the rosary by St. Dominic succeeds in changing the lifestyle of these 'sinners' throughout Toulouse.

Having diminished in practice over the following two centuries, the Blessed Alan de la Roche re-established the rosary in 1460, having been spoken to, of such by the lord, through the sacred host.

The prayer was popularized in 1571 when Pope Pius V asked the faithful to call on the blessed mother through the prayer of the rosary to support the Christians in the victory against the Moslems moving on Europe from Constantinople in the battle of Lepanto, in which they were victorious.

The prayer has become a meditation for Christians to meditate on the mysteries of their salvation, and to thank God for them.  These are the five joyful mysteries, the five luminous mysteries, the five sorrowful mysteries and the five glorious mysteries, all traditionally said on different days of the week.

To say the rosary;

Make the Sign of the Cross and say the 'Apostles Creed'

Say the 'Our Father'

Repeat three 'Hail Marys'

Say the 'Glory Be to the Father'

Announce the First Mystery

Repeat 'Our Father'

Repeat ten 'Hail Marys' while meditating

Repeat 'Glory Be to the Father'

Announce the Second Mystery

Repeat 'Our Father'

Repeat ten 'Hail Marys' while meditating

Repeat 'Glory Be to the Father'

Continue as above with the remaining three mysteries.

At the end of the last decade, recite 'Hail Holy Queen', followed by the customary kissing the crucifix if you are using rosary beads, followed by the sign of the cross.

Counting rosary beads as you pray will free your mind to help with meditation.

It is said that each time the complete rosary is said it gives the blessed mother a crown of beautiful roses, a rose for each Hail Mary.

The Prayers of the Rosary

The Apostles Creed

'I believe in God the Father, Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only begotten Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary Suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, I believe in the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, The forgiveness of sins, The resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.'

Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name;
The Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
Amen.

Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of Grace,
The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou amongst women,
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God
Pray for us, sinners,
Now, and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Glory Be to the Father

Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
the world without end.

Hail Holy Queen

Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of Thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary.

P. Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Let Us Pray

O God, whose only begotten Son, by His life, death, and resurrection, has purchased for us the rewards of eternal life. Grant, we beseech Thee that in meditating upon these mysteries of the Most Holy Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we may imitate what they contain and obtain what they promise, through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
